In light of the recent examinations, I would like to express my deepest disappointment & great shame with the rampant passing out of hints & copying in exams.

Hints
I've heard that some lecturers give blatant/open hints to their students. I'm not talking about lecturers who inform the topics that will be tested on. I'm talking about lecturers who give the exact questions (perhaps with different data/units). Shame on them.

I personally would blame these unprofessional lecturers. It wouldn't be fair to blame the students; how can you blame them anyway? It wouldn't be fair for students with some conscience to refuse the hint at the risk of losing out to other (perhaps less intelligent) students.

Giving hints isn't the right way to prove that the students under your tutelage are cleverer than the rest. Will they retain the knowledge related with that hint? Do they even understand the concept involved in the first place? What kind of students are you producing here? Shame.

Copying
Another activity that I personally detest is copying. It doesn't matter if it's for the finals or for a test, or even for a quiz. Cheating is cheating, I say. Changing the name of the venue doesn't change the name of the crime.

I can't stand it that when the invigilator isn't around, buzzing commences in the room & copying ensues. I get this irritable feeling & this huge pot of disgust that I wish I can slam into these shameless idiots' faces. I feel, especially in the tests, the invigilators should be MORE strict. Don't let these cheaters be. Kick their sorry asses. They don't deserve a single mark for violating a simple rule: DON'T COPY.

That's my take on this. I've no respect for cheap lecturers (they are cheap, we pay them to teach us how to score in a dishonest way, shame) & copycats.

Feel free to discuss.

Hints:

well, my lecturers here doen't give any hints at all. He/She only gives past year questions and exercises. In the real test, only concept is the same, but the question is "way off"...

but i'm also hated this hint especially during SPM.. most of the "pembuat soalan" is coming from the Boarding school.. and some of them gives the SPM question to the student before the SPM start for exercise.. it's really annoying! They know the question before the exam start...

Copying:

some of my friends here mostly copying during the test 1 and test 2..
and the lecturers happily suprises with their results..
"ohh.. i dont know you can get a top scores for this.. congratulations.."

During mandarin, there is my friend who copying during the test and gets full mark.. but then he ask me, can i borrow your notes?
I said "owh, you sarcasm me, you get full mark.. very rude of you.."
and he left angrily.. (heh.. love that moment)

About the lecturer, I was told that some lecturers give very similar questions to the students. I think we all know that the lecturers will submit 2 sets of exam papers to the BPA, then the BPA will decide which set will be used in the exam. I don't have clear details but I would rather the lecturers not tell us the questions that will come out. It doesn't encourage us to study what we SHOULD be studying

About copying, your experience is one I'm sure many people go through. There was a time I had a lab test, 1 of my group mates wanted to see my answer & I told him "this is a test, I can't let you see", then I turned away. I think that cheats & copycats are just slime.

I wonder what the uni/BPA will think about this.

hehe..im guilty of copying.but only when im seated side-by-side with my frens like in pop-quizzes(not separated as in tests finals etc)..labsheets too..but copying is actually allowed in HOT..(Hands-on-Test).its when u bring ur own laptop and develop a system using programming language..its like an open book test and u can also copy-paste coding you've done in advance.

But really,I wuldnt take a chance to copy in a test. All my lecturers are very strict.I wuldnt wanna mess with them.

There's this one time in HOT,my lect Miss N told the whole class the rules.Like one-lil-slip-up-n-ur-dead kinda rules. The rules were, that since we were using our own laptops we weren't suppose to use any other applications besides the notepad to create a webpage(yes u can use a notepad). So as instructed, under no circumstances are u allowed to create the interface by drag-n-dropping using the Micromedia Dreamweaver apps.We were instructed to create the interface entirely using the programming language(ie.PHP)

So she was invigilating us,5 minutes into the test suddenly she said to this girl.

"KELUAR SEKARANG.BAWAK LAPTOP AWAK KELUAR SEKARANG.BALIK"
"SAYA DAH CAKAP JANGAN GUNA MICROMEDIA KAN?"
"KELUAR,SAYA BAGI KOSONG"

i was like.OMF...So scared. And the girl didn't EVEN used the apps, she just minimized it.But my lect caught her and she was just doomed. She stayed there, didnt leave.Begging to take the test cause HOT is like 25%.So she was there begging and crying and whining. She kept saying that she didnt hear that the apps wasnt allowed.(she sat way behind)I cried too, well she's my friend.I felt sorry for her.It was so pitiful, she just lingered there.Kept begging.Followed my lect around wherever she went like a sad puppy-dog.She just went on and on about taking the test all over again, with a different question, etc.

When i was done, and went to submit at the end,(HOT lasted for 3 hours)she was still there begging and crying. So sad.

But i couldn't blame my lect, she had to stay true to her word. She did say if she caught us using the apps, even if we minimize it.she 'll ban us from taking HOT..huhu.Because its actually cheating when u drag & drop ur interface and not generating ur own coding to develop it.
So yea,it was a lesson for everyone.

I feel sorry for your friend but fact is fact: the lecturer had told beforehand, she'd given a clear warning. To do what she plainly asked not to do is simply just asking for trouble.

I praise your lecturer, lulu. She did what a good lecturer would do & to give the girl a chance would mean that she herself is a wimp & other kids can bypass her, which isn't right.

Just a small addition: I personally hate people who just don't understand the meaning of the words "stop writing" in the exams. Even while the invigilator had come to take the paper, & you're STILL writing your name? Here's a hint: instead of going through the paper BEFORE you're allowed to, write your name & other details on the answer paper. Not just ON the cover; write it in the inside. I notice alot of people just waste time looking through the questions before the invigilator said its okay to read...you're going to read the questions ANYWAY, why not put that 1/2 minutes to good use? If your test is 2 hours, use that 2 hours to ANSWER questions. Don't eat up time from that 2 hrs to write your name. Talk about idiocy

haha, true.she's a good lect.Which is why i chose her for my PSM supervisor. She provided a lot of useful insight when i came to ask her bout my PSM title.

On Writing:
I cant even finish all the questions on time EVEN when I've written all my names and particulars during that 1/2 minute.Imagine if I'm ONE of those ppl rowanlim is talking about. It would have been alot worse than it already is.I'd screw the whole subject.haha.What a waste for those who don't use that 1/2 to good use!

if got hints, it feels like going into battlefield with a nuclear bomb. of cos all ur enemies will be dead in no time, but then so will u.

but then if the lecturer insists on telling, i dont mind..... Laughing

I was also once an SBP student. Saying 'some' of those SBP teachers disseminating questions that are exactly the same as those that wud come out in the SPM is TOTALLY UNFAIR. I'm not saying there's no such teacher but plz be more respectful when talking bout this matter. Ppl like me who graduated from such schools wud feel 'small' and other ppl wud be scornful and doubt our achievements in the SPM. Sorry to say this but my straight A's achievement in the SPM didn't come from those teachers telling me what was coming out in the EXAMS. We weren't told or given any hints or tips, but we really worked our asses off to get the results and that's for REAL.

About cheating and receiving hints or tips from the lecturers, it's a question of morality. When someone actually is willing to tell u what's coming out for the exams, wud u refuse accepting them? Some of us who are righteous in anythg they do wud refuse but in the end they wud hav to accept them cuz they know their other friends are actually openly accepting those hints/tips(Not all of these righteous ppl wud however accept the hints but, this population of righteous ppl is always almost zero).

^About morality, let's be honest. I might not like the lecturers giving the tips but I'm not above rejecting it. If taking it levels the playing ground, then I'll take it. The question is can we stop the lecturers from blurting too much? I feel telling the chapters that will come out is fine, but to give QUESTIONS to try? That's too much IMO.
