That's arrogant.

Drama drama drama...

Quote:
Pakatan slams cops for turning Parliament into 'war zone'
KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Rakyat leaders condemned police reaction to the emergency motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister by turning Parliament into a war-zone.

After staging a walk-out in Parliament when the motion was rejected and appeal to Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia was turned down , Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR - Permatang Pauh), DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang (DAP - Ipoh Timur) and PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa (PAS - Bachok), held a press conference to voice their disappointment.

Today is a day we have never seen in history. Parliament has became a war zone, Dr wan Azizah said, referring to the massive police presence and barbed wires on the Parliament bridge.

She the motion was something that Pakatan Rakyat MPs were voicing out for the people and as such the reaction by the police was unbelievable.

I regret that this has to happen and that is why we are feeling so disappointed and sad, she said.

When asked if she had expected the motion to be rejected, Dr Wan Azizah said the Opposition always expected the Speaker to use his discretionary powers to reject a motion without giving a reason.

However, this will not stop us from voicing out the peoples aspirations, she said.

Lim described the police action as "outrageous and disgraceful", adding that it had caused a lot of inconvenience to the public.

Mobilising the police to lock up Kuala Lumpur without reason is puzzling, he said.

Nasharuddin said MPs were also affected by the traffic jams and that Pakatan Rakyat had never issued any instructions for a demonstration.

We look at it as a provocation against the opposition and the people, he said.

cant PKR juz leave us alone for juz a second? leave abdullah alone and let him have some space to breathe. tabling such a disgraceful motion of no confidence is really sick. only someone as sick as anwar ibrahim wud do juz that.

im starting to sympathize with abdullah ahmad badawi over the relentless criticisms and no confidence votes sponsored by those sick cows. all this brouhaha has got to stop already.

finally, i see ur point rowanlim. we want a peaceful malaysia. no more internal strife among the politicians. we are now the laughing stock of the entire world so this has ****ing got to end. wrap it up already and go home shall we?

Meh, it's a disgrace alright. Our politicians acting like kids. Can't believe we voted some of these doo doos to power. I knew the sudden imbalance of power would be scary...While change in the votes had scared BN to want to work harder, relentlessly kicking people without offering a solution is pure gutless & stupid.

I obviously don't support PKR.

i dun think fighting like this is the solution to a utopia..i dun suppose there is a utopia out there...disgraceful as it is, i think abdullah has been very loose on his end by letting this strife go to the next level. whatever it is, i'd not want our country to be the next zimbabwe...inflation a staggering over 100%, ppl dying from starvation in the midst of rising oil and food prices that will soon hit the rooftop and street fightings that escalated into civil wars. come on, do we all want that to sweep over the peaceful streets in our country?

I think we've to do what we can. Demonstrating isn't a smart or a good idea (so ignore all those SMS about going to demonstrate etc! ), I heard that they may make KL a police state...Grrr...Annoying...Every party has their fair share of blame in this...being either too aggressive or too passive...

Definitely. Look at Hindraf, it was meant to be a peaceful demonstration but people were injured.

This is what was reported on NYT.

Quote:
Malaysian police close off Parliament
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: July 14, 2008
Filed at 5:55 a.m. ET

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysian police locked down Parliament with roadblocks and massive security Monday to prevent opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and his supporters from attending a key debate.

Political tensions heightened as Anwar later refused to allow himself to be questioned by police over accusations that he sodomized a male aide. Anwar, who had earlier offered to meet the police voluntarily, said he will now submit himself to interrogation only if he is served with a legal order.

''If the order is served, Anwar will abide by it,'' said his lawyer Sankara Nair. ''There is no fear in Anwar of any arrest. He will face the consequences.''

The developments intensified the political drama that Malaysia has been witnessing since March 8 general elections when the ruling coalition fared badly. It now has a slim 30-seat majority in the 222-member Parliament.

Anwar's bid to bring down the government with parliamentary defections suffered a setback last month when he was hit by the sodomy accusation. He has dismissed it as a political conspiracy.

''One lie after another has been concocted to tarnish my name. I have been portrayed by the powers-that-be as a disturber of the peace,'' Anwar wrote in his blog. ''But the ones who trouble the people are these figures who are afraid of their own shadows.''

The government has also taken hits in the ongoing political drama. Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was linked a few weeks ago to a slain Mongolian woman. A close friend of Najib is on trial on charges of abetting the murder. Najib has denied knowing the woman.

Anwar -- who does not hold a parliamentary seat -- was prevented by court order from attending an attempt by opposition lawmakers to force a debate on a ''crisis of confidence in the government.''

Opposition lawmaker Azmin Ali said there had been no plan to create ''chaos,'' saying the massive security by the government amounted to ''an evil provocation to scare the people.''

The issue became moot when the Parliament speaker Pandikar Amin refused to allow the debate, prompting opposition lawmakers to walk out amid jeers by ruling party members who shouted ''Go on! Get out, get out!''

''Don't bring your political propaganda into this chamber. Don't make Parliament a laughingstock,'' Pandikar said.

The debate was not the same as a no-confidence vote, and did not threaten the government's stability. But police obtained a court order barring Anwar as well as the public from coming within three miles of Parliament, perhaps fearing a repeat of a mass anti-government street protest led by Anwar a decade ago.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohammad Sabtu Osman said 1,600 personnel, or 20 percent of the force, were deployed, which ''effectively prevented any protest.''

He dismissed the opposition's claim that no demonstration was planned, saying according to a police assessment that some 2,500 protesters were expected to gather near Parliament. The police action caused massive traffic jams in many parts of the city, and made the legislature off-limits to people for the first time in recent history.

''Our main mission is the security of the country. We cannot forego security,'' Mohammad Sabtu said.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi defended the police action and blamed the opposition for the traffic jams.

''Go to a stadium and shriek and scream at the top of your voice if you want to demonstrate,'' Abdullah said.

when is that big time *expletive* gonna learn how to give up?

Recent update, this is from BBC

Quote:
Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been arrested over allegations of sodomy, police and his lawyer say.

Armed police surrounded his car early on Wednesday and took him into custody, his lawyer said.

The move came shortly before Mr Anwar was due to given a statement to police over the claims made against him.

The former deputy prime minister denies the allegations, which he says are aimed at ending his political comeback.

The move is likely to exacerbate the political tensions that have emerged since the opposition's unprecedented gains in the general election of March 2008.

Armed police
Mr Anwar has been in a tense stand-off with police since a former male aide accused him of sodomy two weeks ago.

Sodomy is punishable by 20 years' imprisonment in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

The 60 year-old opposition leader had been scheduled to report to police on Wednesday to be interviewed over the allegations.

But an hour before the meeting, armed police wearing balaclavas took him into custody outside the gates of his home, his lawyer said.

"The manner in which they surrounded our vehicle, it put a lot of fear and intimidation into us," Sankara Nair said.

Deputy National Police chief Ismail Omar said Mr Anwar was now being questioned at police headquarters.

"We have to record his statement to complete our investigations," he told the French news agency AFP. "Once the facts are in we can make a decision."

Police can detain the opposition leader for 24 hours, after which they must apply for a court order for further detention.

Political challenge
Mr Anwar's arrest will be seen as provocative by Malaysian opposition groups.

When he was arrested on similar charges 10 years ago, his supporters staged large demonstrations.

A BBC correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, Robin Brant, says it is almost certain that the same thing will happen again now.

The allegations come only weeks after Mr Anwar said he was in a position to launch a challenge to the ruling coalition, with the help of government defectors.

The opposition leader made his claim at a time when Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi is already under intense pressure to resign over poor election results and high fuel prices.

Mr Abdullah has said he will leave office in 2010, defying pressure to step down this December.

Sigh.

what is right and what is wrong? the line separating both right and wrong has been so vague that i personally dunno who to trust and who to blame for all the discord plaguing the entire nation due to the prevailing presence of anwar in the oppostion front. everyone is hurting and the country is gradually falling apart with all the instability the opposition is brewing. believe it or not, the country will be thrown into another state of emergency once again if this keeps up. it's only a matter of time cuz it's already driving itself into tumult due to the current ruling government's extra-caring attitude toward anwar. ppl are beginning to sport the confusion here over who they shud believe in. these saint-like politicians are indeed playing with fire.
