Seems like there's a lot of interesting issues going about these days

Quote:
Open up to non-bumis, MB tells UiTM

TAN Sri Khalid Ibrahim had urged the Universiti Teknologi Mara to allocate at least a 10% quota for non-bumiputra undergraduates, Tamil Nesan reported.

The Selangor Mentri Besar said this would help generate interest among the youth to further their studies. Universities, he said, should not only generate good students but be reminded that the youngsters were also there to form links with those of other races.

Quote:
'No need to open up UiTM to other races'

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is the last bastion for Malay and bumiputra students to further their studies and there is no need to open it up to other races, the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) said.

In a response to the proposal by Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim for UiTM to open up 10% of its intake to other races, PPIM said the move would be seen as challenging the special rights of the Malays.

PPIM project director Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said the government and its leaders had to be tougher in defending such issues because although the country was multiracial, there was "no need to sideline Malay special rights."

"If something like this is allowed to happen, then there will be a worrying situation where many Malay institutions will crumble and be 'Malaysia-nised'.

"It is hoped that the exclusiveness of UiTM is not undermined by anyone and it be allowed to continue as an institution that will strengthen the Malays," he said in a statement.

Noor Nirwandy said that UiTM has not only produced many excellent scholars but has also had many graduates who were able to compete with other races in the job market.

He added that the reason given by Khalid, which was to create more competition amongst students, was unnecessary because university students already competed amongst each other.

What a time for Malaysia. Share your thoughts. I'm not sure if opening UiTM to non-bumiputeras is a good idea :/

Well, from my point of view..
its just another political games.

I think that in the current situation, lets us conserve some sensitive issues. Its just only create a huge gap between each other.

^Agreed, I was merely asking for opinions, no worries Smile

Isn't UiTM under MARA? Where does their money come from? I'm always confused :/

Oh I see...I think I'd rather leave UiTM as it is, open more places for scholarships & other public universities for the non-malays. The idea that having non-malays to bring in competition is silly if you're just going to have 10% of non-malays coming in...It's already doing fine, don't you think?

id had enough of being rejected for so many times for so many scholarships even though i fared way better than my malay friends who received scholarships furthering their studies in the UK and the US. and even worse, i ended up in form six. all of them happened to hav the chance to jump fence and further their studies abroad but never appreciated that privilege and ended up flunking in their studies over there. i really dunno what to say..well such is life here in MALAYSIA..so much for a country that prides itself as a multi-racial country practising democracy and mutual tolerance and wanting to create a BANGSA MALAYSIA(MALAYSIAN NATION)

i always thot of myself as a TRUE MALAYSIAN. i criticized chinese who didnt speak fluent BM. i criticized my dad who'd always favor china over malaysia. i criticized those non-malays who were against the idea of malay's special rights. i criticized SUQIU who were against the idea of SEKOLAH WAWASAN. i criticized lim kit siang for his malaysian malaysia vision. i criticized the idea of having chinese vernacular schools and that they did not instill the sense of patriotism among the chinese students. i was totally against any vernacular schools and hoped for all to attend national schools. but that all took a sharp 360degree turn after having experienced the heartwrenching rejection by the country that i obviously had always looked up to all those times. and i got the feeling that i was nowhere near to being a TRUE MALAYSIAN. I speak fluent BM. ppl wud always mistake me as a malay. but what did that give me in return? a total of FIVE rejections while my malay friend received TWO offers in which he quit halfway on one of the offers? id learned my tough lessons on this one, that me being patriotic, always stood up straight when NEGARAKU was played, always took pride in BM, always wanted to contribute sth to MALAYSIA, always thot that this was my home DO NOT help in telling the malays that im truly malaysian and they DEFINITELY DO NOT help in obscuring my skin tone.

no racist remarks intended. i was only speaking my mind. sorry if anyone got offended.

Just remember one thing.
As long as you are born in Malaysia, follow the regulations..
you are a true Malaysians..

The things got complicated like this because there is someone who taking advantage of the situations or pull a trigger in the back...

^u really think so?? cuz ur not the only person i'd actually related this matter to...these ppl always tell me that if were a malay, i'd hav gotten the privilege FAIR AND SQUARE...gosh, i wonder if the usa ever had such quota, wud there be THE MULTIRACIAL USA in this world like now, or wud there be THE USA of only ONE RACE, THE WHITE USA!!!

u obviously hadnt the slightest idea of the feeling of being rejected and turned away!! when the person u trusted the most backstabbed u, then i'd guess u'd get what im saying...

p.s. r u hinting that im going against the law/constitution?

I can't agree with that, I'm not born to follow regulations blindly. We have rights too & we also have our instincts that tells us when something isn't right, it isn't right. We have to admit our government is flawed & times have changed, whatever worked previously is not a sure-fire way to succeed now.

This issue has opened up our eyes to see how sensitive education & race is in Malaysia, I certainly didn't think the UiTM students needed to demonstrate, I wonder if that's even legal in the AUKU. Previously they opened up the MARA schools to non-malays for the same reason (right, ash?), not sure if it works.

Again, I'm not sure if opening it up is a good idea, seeing the response we got. The government should instead open more seats in other public uni. Cut out the racial quota, go completely & genuinely on merit. We don't need discrimination in a liberal world.

I think I would rather they give aid to those in need regardless of race/religion. 'Nuff said.

I don't mind leaving UiTM to Malays, not such an issue to me, I'd rather they open more places in other universities; I'm not sure how the status quo is in UiTM, if they REALLY need to create more competition among their students.
