Well I thought to get to know what is it about UMP that you're unhappy about. Perhaps we can bring this to authority (lala) & hopefully things will improve.

In this thread:
1. Please be structured. Don't toss your opinions all over the place.
2. State fact, not fiction.
3. The complaint must be reasonable.

MY COMPLAINTS

Cafe
-expensive food, inconsistent pricing: there should be a ceiling price, let there be healthy competition, maybe the quality of food wil improve.
-unsanitary environment: well flies everywhere, the messy tables...it takes 2 to tango...some people eat without manners. On another note, sometimes the cutlery isn't clean, eating from polysterene box is a safer bet.
-too many cats (everywhere): spay 'em. This isn't a kitty preservation area.
-no vegetarian food: last I heard, vegetarians need to eat too. A spinach dish with ikan bilis is NOT vegetarian food. Let outside operators bring vegetarian food in for our vegan friends.
-food not properly prepared: sigh...it couldn't hurt to cut that vege abit SMALLER...
-TV: Is TV3 the ONLY channel in UMP??

Hostel
-stuffed toilet bowls & sinks: kampung mentality or something...
-no recycling bins: I seriously feel sorry for the cleaners who have to dig in rubbish to take out recyclable items.
-cats: spay 'em please. They poop everywhere.
-water machine: I don't use them but people tell me that they are always breaking down. There should be some proper maintenance.
-washing machine: Water clog in the washing machine is ridiculous. Takes weeks before I can use the machine in my block.
-Utilizing the study room: I suggest use 1 of the study rooms (in my experience, people don't use them much) & convert it to a TV room. Could it hurt? Honestly people...A little bit of entertainment can't hurt people...

Overall campus
-not enough shaded walkways, especially prevalent during rain/sun
-vehicles drive too fast (student, staff, etc)

Academic
-CL (cooperative learning) is one of the dumbest concepts. There are some subjects that you can't just LEARN BY YOURSELF. As if your pals are any wiser...I doubt that if the lecturer was in our shoes, she/he would love the idea of CL anymore than us.
-Book pricing. There was a scenario where the same book was sold at different prices by different faculties. This is unacceptable.
-Mandarin classes: I think there's no need for those who are already so fluent to join the class. Same goes for English Dynamics 1.
-Presentation: I HATE when people present in MALAY. And you wonder why some people's English sucks. If the uni isn't going to take a more serious stance in improving the standard of English here, don't kid yourself into thinking that you're going to produce world-class engineers. It's redundant to teach English Dynamics/Action etc when English is not being implemented in other subjects. Kudos to lecturers who try their best to use English. It's a torture to listen to horrible presentations. How are you going to encourage people to improve English if you LET them do it in Malay?? Rolling Eyes
-No newspapers: Why don't we have newspapers? I'm sure we all know that 1 thing that uni graduates lack is GENERAL KNOWLEDGE. The newspaper is the best source for this. All I see at the shops are magazines. Pfft. The newspaper in KMC is not enough..not everyone goes to KMC to read newspaper. We should cultivate reading habits in our "future engineers".

Music: MAN THIS IS AN ISSUE CLOSE TO HEART
-Girls can't sing: We've a thread about that. I don't see anything wrong with a female singer on stage.
-Not enough instruments. We've been waiting for an euphonium for nearly half a sem now...
-Lack of a proper place to practise. Everyone's using the USB to practise...they should allocate an ENTIRE FLOOR AT LEAST for USB...2 rooms is NOT ENOUGH.
-Late notice: previously especially for the OG, we are only informed to perform 4-5days before the performance. That's not enough time. It's not easy to gather performers & to rehearse. I hope they will show some respect & give us some time to prepare properly.

I'll think of more Smile

Yeah I hope the uni authority will pay some serious attention to the conditions here. They may not be aware of it because they don't go through it, but they should take note of our welfare as students.

Plus some of the problems are not solely the fault/weakness of the uni...like the girls in my block, even though a notice was pasted "jangan buang sisa makanan ke dalam sinki", the sinks still get clogged up because of food...Sometimes I feel so disgusted & nauseated to go to the loo. What kind of mentality is this? The youngest would be around 17 years old, that's old enough to have some bloody common sense not to throw food into the sink. What the hell is the rubbish bin there for? Decoration? Idiots. This kind of "intelligence" isn't parallel with what is expected of a UNIVERSITY STUDENT.

They should go back to the kampung or wherever they come from & take a lesson in how to wash dishes. Evil or Very Mad

-then is da hygiene problem!!!i wonder AGAIN.....isit tat they open a 'flies farm' as kerja sampingan??especially behind da stall....it's lik a whole big bunch of 'flies farm' sssss thr.....gross u noe???if outsider c tat....UMP stil got image mer??? this oso cause me 2 owes get stomachache n even vomit...cz of taken in inhygenic food!!!

-N da type of food n how they cook n handle them....it's lik every stall r hiring da same cook?? Rolling Eyes Question (i mean except da roti canai 1 lar...)almost 90% of da food...either v hot or v oily....n some of da vege it's lik they cook til they turn from green 2 yellowish (OMG~~~i cant differenciate whether it's fresh o not!!)At least we r now UMP,y cant da food be more standard??

Sheila, I agree with everything that you said. Especially about the green vege turning yellow in the kafe...Sigh...And the drinks...OMG exposed to flies! This is just horribe...

You know what? About 2 weeks back, I went to kafe then I walked through the back...I saw the people opening the hatch to the longkang...It was so utterly DISGUSTING...they were SCOOPING up SLUDGE...I can't bear to imagine what created that sludge...the smell was HORRENDOUS...It was a terrifying experience...

Sigh...

It's like...this kind of thing is UNACCEPTABLE outside. Once, my friend went to cafe to eat, and the plate was dirty, so she asked the cafe operator to give her a clean plate, then the mak cik said she was fed up with UMP students, like we expect too much...but HEY! Clean cutlery is a BASIC NECESSITY when it comes to food! I'm like wth...

Yes if I'm not mistaken it's that stall...OMG larva in the fish stomach? I feel so sick right now Confused

That's just plain disgusting...Another thing is how they handle the food. I don't think it would hurt them (or us) to use GLOVES to handle food...Also, the food are EXPOSED to flies. So killing flies is a herculean task but at least cover the food for heaven's sake...Today I wanted to buy some keropok lekor but I saw flies weaving in & out...I changed my mind...

*shudder*

I don't mind paying the petrol to go out & eat, but frankly, this is just too much Mad

I do think sensitive issues such as the ones involving religion should be left out.

Respect is important.

Religious belief of others are to be respected and it is applied to Malaysians.

I know i am not the type of person who is very 'taat' to talk about religion, but this thing about religion could promote radical actions kalau dibaca oleh mereka yang fikirannya tidak terbuka.

Lets put religious matters aside, i am sure many of the muslims reading this forum will appreciate it.

Now, moving on to the points:

1) Cafeteria - Pricing and cleanliness.

The cafeteria in UMP is surely not the best, but i do think that it shouldn't be the worst. I have stayed in UKM and UM, where both of the universities are located in areas with high cost of living. But surprisingly, the prices are quite reasonable for students.

How come the price in UMP can be so unreasonable sometimes? Can't the university gave some of the money that the government gave to them so that the cafeteria could at least give a reasonable price to students. We are quite desperate because we can't cook legally at the hostel, and going out every time to eat is not an option coz most of the students can't afford it.

The cleanliness of the cafeterias boleh dipertikaikan. Their attire tu xkisah sangatlah, tapi jaga sikitlah the surroundings. I think if the MPK rajin buat spot-check, maybe they will be diligent enough to clean their premise.

The case where you said there are maggots inside the fish is really terrifying (i'm eating bread only after this Very Happy). That should get the university's attention. Kalau tak report, this thing will never stop.

You are what you eat!

2) Hostel

Izinkan saya berbahasa melayu.

Orang minyak? Makhluk asing?

3) Facilities

Nak kata macam mana ye? Kita pon sedia maklum UMP ni bukannya dah lama tersergam indah, baru berapa tahun ditubuhkan. Kalau dihitung, tak boleh masuk sekolah rendah lagi umurnya. Kesabaran memang dituntut sepenuhnya.

(end)

Bak kata my lecturer, 'students are the customers to a university'. It is their job to fulfill our expectations or at least try to do so.

To all Muslim members, I apologize if I offended you with my statements about religion.

Perhaps it was shallow of me to say it was "kampung" mentality to be blamed for horrible conditions at the hostel. Rani's right, it's down to a person's personality.

@Ariff: Yes I heard that too. I wonder which is the truth: nobody wants to come here or the uni won't let anyone else operate here?

Issues like hygiene at the cafe is something that CANNOT be tolerated; imagine if the cafe was transported outside of UMP...it wouldn't last a day. Just because alot of us can't have food elsewhere means we have to put up with this kind of NEGLIGENCE.

Update: This is the recent announcement posted by MPP dated 8/4/2008

Quote:
Makluman Awal Berkaitan Masalah Yang Timbul Di Kafeteria

Sekian, terima kasih.
