Hey guys!

Well yesterday I was just surfing online when I came upon Joanne Yeoh's website here

Here's a short intro about this amazing violinist:

Quote:
Joanne Yeoh obtained a First Class Honours in her Degree from the University of Middlesex, United Kingdom in 1998. Upon completing her degree course, she was awarded a Luther and Ernest Gaunt Scholarship for Strings to study at the prestigious University of Leeds. During her study there, she was also chosen to receive a Foreign and Commonwealth Office Scholarship, in association with British Council and the University of Leeds. She has since completed her Masters in Music Performance (MMUS).

While studying in the United Kingdom, she had the privilege to participate in several seminars and masterclasses held by prominent musicians. In the summer of 1998, she participated in the Aberswyth Music Festival in Wales, the celebrated Edinburgh Summer Festival and the Aberdeen Music Festival in Scotland. She was also given the opportunity to play an active role with the Sorrel Quartet during the Leeds Annual Music Festival 1999.

Since returning to Malaysia, Joanne was selected to participate in the prestigious Asian Youth Orchestra for the year 2000, travelling to Vietnam, Japan, Australia, Korea and Hong Kong.

In 2002, Joanne had the privilege to perform alongside Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung in his Music Odyssey Tour 2002/03 covering over 40 concerts around the world. Her tour with Jacky Cheung included performances in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, China, Taiwan, Brunei, USA, UK and Canada.

In 2003, Joanne was selected to perform with Taiwanese heart-throb David Tao in his Soul Power Tour 2003 touring Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.

In 2004, Joanne was selected as the Honouree for The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award under the category of Personal Improvement and Accomplishment. At the end of 2005, Joanne launched her debut album Pulse of The Metropolis.

Also in 2005, Joanne was confirmed as a fully accredited examiner of the prestigious Trinity Guildhall (Trinity College London) Music Examination panel.

Presently Joanne lectures at the Music Department of the Universiti Putra Malaysia.

So out of curiosity, I sent her an e-mail inviting her to conduct a violin masterclass for us next sem. She replied! She wouldn't mind to have a violin masterclass for us next sem! So here are some of the details:

1. Date: It's not fixed but I'm planning to have it on September or October, I don't want it to clash with the Bulan Merdeka. We should discuss the date.

2. Venue: UMP.

3. Format:
- it'll be on a weekend, the duration is 1.5 to 2 hrs.
- she will go through the basics, like bowing techniques, fingering etc.
- she requested for 1 or 2 people to come onstage with her.
- she will charge RM300 for 1.5 hrs. I think each participant has to pay a fee, RM10-15.
- she will not need accomodation, after the masterclass, she will go back.
- she will need compensation for petrol.

4. Other details:
- initially I planned this for UMP violin students only, then I thought that people in Kuantan might want to come as well, so we could promote this program to outside the uni. We will have to set a limit though, as to how many people will come, then we can set the location, probably WDKU1/2.
- on our side, we will have to handle the registration, the fees, the food & beverages.
- perhaps after the masterclass, we will have a photography & autograph signing session. Maybe we could ask her to provide photos etc for that session.
- we will have to provide a formal letter (from USB) to invite her to come for the masterclass.

So we have to discuss the details ASAP. Hopefully if this works, it will help our budding violinists to know how to play like a pro.

Feel free to discuss in this thread.

PS. We can also plan masterclasses for other instruments as well Wink

ZOMG I'M EXCITED!!!

^This means we will have to do a proposal, I think, unless the USB handles this. I will talk to Mr.Zaki. So guys, tell me what you think; about the fees, promotion, etc...

^She's not doing this for free. She'll charge RM300 for 1.5 hrs, not including petrol compensation. If we get around 30 people, each person can pay RM10, if we get around 50 people (targeting people from town), they can pay RM10 still & we can get to buy F & B, I can ask her if she could provide posters etc for us to promote the class, souvenier for her...

EDIT: We will only open it to UMP students, she set the RM300 fee for students. So we won't open it to outsiders. I think it doesn't necessarily have to be for violin students only, I think anyone who's interested can join; just pay for the fee & you're in.

She will need volunteers to come onstage & perform with her. I will ask her the requirements for these volunteers Wink

Please give more ideas hehehe Very Happy

I would like to know when is the date for the Charity Concert & the Charity Trip, I don't want it to clash Smile

Yeah! This will be a good program Smile
If Joanne Yeoh is coming to have masterclass with our violinist, then our violinist can learn really great knowledge about how to play violin.

Since our OG Priciple is going to take this program, i'm looking forward about this program Laughing Wink

I'll suggest that we only open the participants for UMP students.

Thank you Kelvin

This is, of course, a group effort! I need AJKs! (to put in my proposal hehe )

I agree, we should keep it to UMP students only. As long as you're interested & you are willing to pay for the fee, then you're in. She should go through basics such as how to hold the violin, the bow, fingering, etc. Then she will also use the volunteers to pin-point more technical errors. It should be a great experience.

Yes I'm planning to do it in September, I only hope it won't clash with test 1. Then again, the program is a simple one, so it shouldn't be a problem. Can you propose a date? Any suggestions? Because she's not free in July & Aug is full of bigger programs.

EDIT: I'll post the AJK list here

Program Manager: Jo Ann
Vice Program Manager: Chi Hui
Secretary:
Treasurer:
Logistic & Transport:
Food & Beverages:
Publicity: David
Program Coordinator:
MC:

If i'm not wrong, next sem schedule will be:

6 weeks - Minggu Perkuliahan
1 week - Mid-term break
5 weeks - Minggu Perkuliahan
1 week - Cuti Raya
3 weeks - Minggu Perkuliahan
1 week - study week
2 weeks - Final exam

Try not to touch on week 6,7 and 13,14. These are the weeks that normally lecturers will give test 1 & 2.

^If that's the case, the first 2 weeks of September would be good. I only hope it won't clash with the Charity concert & the Charity Trip, I've to check with Ainul about that Wink
