Just came across this today:

Quote:
Decision on Science, Maths is for new batch of students

PUTRAJAYA: Students who are already learning Science and Mathematics in English will not be affected by whatever decision is made on the policy at the end of the year.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the present cohort of students would continue learning the two subjects in English.

"I know some parents are worried that their children will have to learn the two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia if the policy should revert," he told reporters after attending a session of the roundtable discussion on the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English.

Hishammuddin had earlier announced that a decision on whether Science and Mathematics would continue to be taught in English would be made after the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results are released at the end of the year.

The decision, he added, was not easy and should not be politicised.

"Whatever decision is made will come into effect for a new batch of students," he said.

Hishammuddin said the decision would not only be based on this year's UPSR results alone.

"The results are only a part of the decision-making process as we will take into account other views as well," he said.

He said the roundtable discussion would discuss all reports and observations on the implementation of the policy so far.

More roundtable discussions with other stakeholders such as parent-teacher associations, teacher unions and non-governmental organisations would also be held, he said.

He said the ministry also had to look at the impact of the policy in many areas including rural and urban schools, on the various races as well as in primary and secondary schools, he said.

"Our efforts in inviting other professionals from outside the ministry proves our sincerity in finding the best approach for our students," he said.

Any decision that would be made must not be based on emotions or perceived assumptions but on facts, he added.

The policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in English was implemented in phases, starting off with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003.

Why on earth do they need to "revise" it? English should be the way to go for Science & Math, damn it.

Look what happened under Dr.M's reign, when these subjects were taught in Malay, not only at school but also at universities: the results are our lecturers, most of them conduct our classes in Malay. Lovely. So is it any wonder that lack of profiency in English is a problem for our graduates when even our lecturers are not "that" good in English?

If they decide to teach the subjects in Malay, then forget about Wawasan 2020, it'll just be a sad joke.

hmmm, doesn't really enthuse me whether it's in english or other languages. no substantial point implementing that if many of us are against the use of english in those subjects. trust me rowanlim, i'd gone the extra trying to justify the advantage of teaching math and science in english and it all came to only one coda: LET THEM BE.

the CHINESE especially have been really objectionable and defensive when it comes to ENGLISH taking over their language to conduct these two subjects. they even go as far as having dual language classes for these subjects. If u think a dual language as in having mandarin and english instructions on the exam papers, then u are wrong. they hav two kinds of science and math classes. one conducted in english and the other in mandarin. u have any idea how ridiculous that is? im in shock cuz that will only further contribute to the freaky mountainous burden entrusted on the students. look at how big the bags the students are carrying on their back in the morning of each school day. GOD, i'm DANG sure we'd all ask 'is that a bag or a luggage?'...

so my point is, if ppl are really that reluctant to give up their EXCESSIVE language pride, there's no point forcing them to accept science and math in english. i dun see a point in begging them to accept the fact that science and math in english is the ticket for us to compete at the INTERNATIONAL ARENA. if they wanna live in their own cocoons, we might as well LET THEM BE. begging this bunch of conservatives is a waste of time, energy and money.

Not when my children will be subjected to crap. If it were to simply please a certain group, that's fine, but adjusting a policy that'll affect everyone isn't something I'm fond of.

Wait and see. Implementation done with blind efforts which cause more. The Government has to open their eyes for such things. The one who is gonna suffer will be the students and apparently the government intention of developing 'anak wawasan' is like a jigsaw puzzle and a swing.

I don't think that we need to revise that much.. doesn't they know that who will becomes the victim?
sometimes i think we should choose someone from the education background to becomes our education minister... or at least ask them to take the SPM one more time.....
